PM gives posts Umno MPs who backed Najib in pulling support for Muhyiddin

Azalina Othman Said and Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub were among those who had heeded the call for Umno MPs to revoke their support for the former prime minister.

Two MPs from Umno who had backed former leader Najib Razak in revoking support for Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister have been given posts in the government and at a government-linked company.

Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said, who recently resigned as deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker, was appointed as special adviser to the prime minister for law and human rights.

Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub meanwhile was appointed as chairman of Felcra Bhd.

Jazlan announced his withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin on Jan 9. The Kelantan Umno chief also resigned from his post as chairman of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board after expressing his dissatisfaction with the Perikatan Nasional government.

Azalina, on the other hand, resigned as one of two deputy speakers on Aug 23.

She cited conflict between her party role and being a ruling MP, while calling for the post of speaker and deputy speaker to be filled by those who are impartial and who hold no political posts.

Her withdrawal of support as well as Jazlan’s helped thin down Muhyiddin’s fragile majority, causing him to lose the support of the majority and resulting in his resignation as prime minister in August.

Hasan Arifin is also chairman of Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad, a position to which he was appointed last year.

Meanwhile, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has appointed Hasan Arifin as its chairman, with the Rompin MP stepping into his new role on October 1.

He will be the fourth TNB chairman in under 20 months.

Hasan takes over the chairmanship of the national electricity corporation from Mahdzir Khalid who resigned on Aug 29 after he was appointed rural development minister in Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet.

Mahdzir himself was only appointed as chairman in May 2020, taking over from Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir. Ahmad Badri had replaced long-serving chairman Leo Moggie on March 11, 2020.

Hasan is also chairman of Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad, a position to which he was appointed last year.
