Three things Umno must do on its anniversary – by Tok Mat

PETALING JAYA : Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has called on the party to carry out three important steps if it intends to keep on celebrating its anniversary.

The party celebrates its 75th anniversary tomorrow, and in a post on Facebook, the Rantau assemblyman also known as Tok Mat said keeping up with the times should be a priority for the party.

“Don’t continue with outdated nostalgia (and) stop talking about past glory when the current situation is very turbulent and not as bright as before,” he said.

“Second, its supporters must be intergenerational. The generational change is real and must be accepted.

Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan says members should stop talking about past glory and instead keep up with the times.

“The best political ideas and thoughts are no longer measured by the age of the speaker, but by the quality and validity of the idea,” added Mohamad.

The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar also stressed that the party’s values and mission must be defended by those who “sincerely love Umno”, as opposed to those looking to make a living from Umno.

Thanking Umno supporters for remaining loyal to the party despite the recent difficulties and hardships, Mohamad said he was confident that the party would grow from strength to strength if its members worked hard, were united and produced ideas that could drive the nation forward.

Formed in 1947, Umno was the leader of the coalition that governed the country for more than 60 years before Pakatan Harapan came to power in 2018.

It is not a component party of the current Perikatan Nasional government and has previously said it would not support the PN coalition ahead of the next general election.
