Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak says the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) should not expect to collect an additional RM1.74 billion tax penalty from him.
Najib said he does not have that amount to pay to LHDN.
“Do not expect to collect the unreasonable additional tax penalty from me, because I do not have RM1.74 billion to pay,” he said on his official Facebook page today (April 15).
Last week, the Pekan lawmaker confirmed that he has been served with a bankruptcy notice by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN).
Najib said the notice was due to his failure to pay a sum of RM1.74 billion of income tax arrears to LHDN from 2011.
He, however questioned the timing of the bankruptcy notice served by the tax collector, claiming that the timing of the notice — coming on the first day of his appeal hearing in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, was intended to “add salt to an open wound”.
According to the notice, the amount of arrears he was supposed to pay was RM1.69 billion, which the arrears dated until July 22, 2020.
