JAKARTA : Sunarto has to start a new career at the age of 55 after losing his job as a security guard at a Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in Jakarta due to the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He refused to give in and bought an old Daihatsu van where his wife can sell instant noodles, coffee and snacks. He also offers flat tire repair along
Jalan Tanjung Selor, Central Jakarta.
“I can’t imagine if I don’t have my own business during this difficult time,” Sunarto told Jakarta Globe as his wife cooked fried noodle for a customer.
“I listened to a friend of mine who said ‘better catch small fish and eat it today than forever wait for a whale and die suffering’,” Sunarto said.
There is no major modification of the van as the couple only needs to fully open its tailgate to display a variety of instant drinks and noodles. A large umbrella is erected at the side door.
The gas stove is put on the sidewalk to cook noodle or hot water for coffee.
