Umno No. 2 talks about members’ unease over PPBM plan to join Muafakat

KUALA LUMPUR : Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has given a different take on the position of PPBM or Pribumi Bersatu in relation to its wish to join the Muafakat Nasional alliance comprising Umno and PAS.

According to Mohamad, Umno’s grassroots are not comfortable and do not agree with the plan by PPBM.

PPBM president and prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had recently said that his party wanted to join Muafakat after being officially invited, with Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa later commenting that Muafakat had agreed to this in principle.

In speaking to the Free Malaysia Today online portal, Mohamad pointed out that although Umno president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi had said it would be up to Muafakat’s steering committee to decide, this idea must first be referred to the Umno supreme council.

“It is no different to when we decided to form Muafakat…. the final decision was made by the council.

“I have received a lot of feedback from grassroots members who are not comfortable with the idea and do not agree with it.

“Many Umno members still remember the insults, disparaging and disrespectful remarks hurled at us (by PPBM leaders before GE14) and still feel hurt,” he said.

“My presence here (as deputy president) is because of the grassroots, so their interests must be looked after.”

Muafakat was formally set up in September last year. Together with PPBM, it forms the loose Perikatan Nasional allaince which now helms the federal government with support from Sarawak’s ruling GPS coalition.

In a tweet Zahid said the views of the Umno grassroots would be considered before any decision is made, further confirming that the final decision lies with the supreme council.
