Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob explained that Malaysian citizens and foreigners coming into Malaysia would no longer have the liberty to isolate themselves for a period of 14 days at their own homesor at an address registered with the Malaysian Health Ministry (MOH) after entering the country from overseas.

Instead, individuals would have to pay for accommodation at government designated quarantine facilities or selected private hotels.

The minister adds that returning Malaysians are also no longer required to be tested for Covid-19 prior to their entry into the country as they would automatically be shipped into quarantine when they arrive.

This rule however would still apply to foreign nationals, whereby they would have to undergo a Covid-19 swab test three days prior to their arrival into Malaysia.

The change in Covid-19 standard operating procedure (SOP) comes after news of individuals returning from overseas disobeying home quarantineorders.

At the height of the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, Malaysia reportedly had 409 quarantine centersacross the country said to be able to accommodate over 40,000 people including those who arrive from abroad.

However, these centers were later closed in stages in favor of a 14-day self-quarantine at home for arrivals who tested negative for Covid-19 after the country transitioned into the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) period.
