IJN now capable of implanting world’s smallest pacemaker

KUALA LUMPUR : The Malaysia’s National Heart Institute (IJN) has became the first hospital outside of the United States to implant Micra AV pacemaker, an implantable device for the treatment of a slow heart rate.

IJN chief executive officer Datuk Dr Aizai Azan Abdul Rahim said Micra AV is the world’s smallest pacemaker with atrioventricular (AV) synchrony.

The device is used to treat patients who suffer from AV block, which is a form of heart rhythm blockage, where the electrical signals between the chambers of the heart have been impaired.

Dr Aizai Azan said some patients used to have problems receiving traditional pacemakers because of its long-term complication risks.

“As it is a leadless pacemaker, the Micra AV greatly reduces the risk of patients experiencing complications such as displacement,” he said during a press conference at IJN here yesterday.

He explained that the Micra AV is just about the size of a vitamin supplement capsule and therefore enables doctors to implant it through a minimally-invasive procedure.

The device’s leadless pacing technology also offers a host of potential benefits and shorter procedure time as it only takes 15 to 45 minutes to implant the device, depending on the patient’s heart condition.

Dr Aizai Azan said IJN had been deeply involved with the device’s development, as well as its pre-clinical studies, since 2018.

IJN senior consultant cardiologist and a member of the cardiac electrophysiology team, Dr Azlan Hussin, said the device came at the right time when the IJN medical team was brainstorming on minimising exposure to Covid-19.

He said six patients had undergone the treatment, with the first being on March 19 and the latest was yesterday, involving an 81-year-old man.

Micra AV is developed and manufactured by Medtronic Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
