PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to table motions seeking to remove current Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof and his deputy Nga Kor Ming in the coming parliamentary sitting which begins July 13. Nga, a DAP politician, is also Teluk Intan MP.
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzli and Kangar MP Noor Amin Ahmad tweeted a photo of the Order Paper for the July 13 sitting today showing four motions including naming former Election Commission chairman Azhar Azizan @ Harun as the new speaker with Umno MP Azalina Othman Said as his deputy.
The motions also stated that Muhyiddin had agreed for the new duo to serve the positions should they be appointed, in line with Order 4(1) of the Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat.
Business publication The Edge Markets had reported the motions yesterday, citing this document.
The July 13 session will be the second meeting of the third session of the 14th Parliament, scheduled to last 25 days until Aug 27.
Earlier, The Malaysian Insight reported this happened on June 29, with the portal citing sources.
Azhar was appointed as the EC chairman in September 2018.
“He sent his resignation in. But it will be up to Parliament to debate his nomination when it sits on July 13. It could go either way but Perikatan Nasional has the majority to push the nomination through,” the portal quoted sources.
